Stocks drop over new Covid variant
On Friday, stocks dropped as the new coronavirus variant first detected in South Africa appeared to be spreading across the globe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell over 900 points.
 
Shooting in North Carolina shopping mall
On Friday at 3.23 pm, a shooting was reported on the second floor of a mall in Durham, NC. Three people were shot, and three other people had non-gunshot wounds, which were non-life-threatening.
 
New COVID-19 variant B1.1.529 detected in South Africa
On November 25th, South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed that a new COVID-19 variant - B1.1.529 - has been detected in the country. As of Thursday, the NICD and other private laboratories recorded 22 positive cases of the new variant using genomic sequencing.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited service members stationed at the Coast Guard Station Brant Point in MA on Thanksgiving Day. The Bidens also virtually greeted US troops across the globe and thanked them for their service.
 
52 killed in Russian coal mine blast
A ventilation shaft in a Siberian mine caught on fire Thursday, filling it with smoke and killing 11. By the end of the day, several rescuers reportedly suffocated during a failed operation to reach the deceased miners.
 
Benign polyp removed during Biden’s colonoscopy
Dr. Kevin O'Connor, Physician to the President, has released a colonoscopy follow-up report. President Biden has had a polyp removed from his colon, which has been identified as a tubular adenoma after histological examination.
 
US lawmakers meet with Taiwan officials
On Thursday, five US lawmakers arrived in Taiwan to meet with government officials, defying a warning from Beijing to stay away. The Chinese embassy wrote, "We strongly urge the Congresswoman immediately cancel the planned visit to Taiwan, and not to support and embolden separatist forces of 'Taiwan independence,' lest it causes huge damage to the China-US relations and the peace and stability of Taiwan Straits."
 
Trio convicted of murder in Ahmaud Arbery murder trial
In February 2020, three white men - Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William Bryan - chased and shot Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man, in Brunswick, GA. On Wednesday, a jury found all three men guilty of Arbery's murder - the trio now faces a sentence of life in prison. A judge will decide if the sentence will be served with or without the possibility of parole.
 
Boat carrying people migrating to UK capsizes, killing at least 31
A boat headed for the UK has capsized in the Channel near Calais, drowning at least thirty-one people. The UN's International Organization for Migration confirmed that the shipwreck, which has led to the deaths of at least 31 people, is the largest loss of life in the Channel since data collection started in 2014.
 
Nominations announced for the Office of Management and Budget
On November 24th, President Joe Biden nominated Shalanda Young to serve as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and Nani Coloretti to serve as the Deputy Director of the OMB. Shalanda Young is currently serving as the Acting Director of the OMB after the Senate confirmed her as Deputy Director in a bipartisan 63-37 vote in March 2021.
