The Facts
The Memphis Police Department has released body cam footage from the arrest of Tyre Nichols on January 7, after several weeks of investigation.
In the video, a confrontation occurs when officers attempt a traffic stop. “While attempting to take the suspect into custody, another confrontation occurred; however, the suspect was ultimately apprehended,” says the Memphis Police Department. “The suspect was transported to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.”
Nichols died three days later. The officers involved were terminated on January 20 after a disciplinary hearing.
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy says a grand jury has handed down indictments against the former officers of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression.
Memphis Police Director Cerelyn Davis promised “absolute accountability” for those responsible for Nichols’ death, saying that police departments are conducting reviews and reforms to prevent such incidents from happening again.
