Nurses go on strike in New York City

More than 7000 nurses go on strike in NYC. The nurses are calling for fairer contracts that improve patient care.

Where: Mount Sinai

The Facts

On January 9th, more than 7000 nurses at two hospitals in New York City went on strike for fair contracts that improve patient care.
After bargaining late into the night at Montefiore and Mount Sinai Hospital, no agreement was reached.
A statement from Governor Kathy Hochul on negotiations between New York City Hospitals and nurses reads, “there remain outstanding issues at Montefiore and Mount Sinai and I am now calling for binding arbitration so that all parties can swiftly resolve.”
Mount Sinai Hospital released an official statement highlighting that “the union refused to accept the same offer of a 19.1 percent wage increase over three years that it agreed to at eight other hospitals.”
Nurses at the NYSNA facilities of NY-Presbyterian, Richmond University Medical Center, and Maimonides Medical Center reached tentative agreements containing improvements to wages and staffing. However, nurses at all three facilities fought off management’s proposals to cut healthcare benefits.
NYSNA stated that “we welcome the Governor’s support in fighting for fair contracts that protect our patients, and we will not give up on our fight to ensure that our patients have enough nurses at the bedside. We call on Gov. Hochul to join us in putting patients over profits and to enforce existing nurse staffing laws.”
