The Facts

On January 28, Memphis police released a statement that said the SCORPION (Street Crimes Operations to Restore Peace in Our Neighbourhoods) unit has been deactivated.
“Today Memphis police officers assigned to the SCORPION Unit met with Chief Cerelyn ‘C.J.’ Davis to discuss the path forward for the department and the community in the aftermath of the tragic death of Tyre Nichols,” read the statement.
According to the statement, the decision to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit comes after talking to the family of Tyre Nichols, community leaders and other officers not involved in the incident.
The statement added that “the officers currently assigned to the unit agree unreservedly with this next step.”
The Memphis Police Department said it was imperative that the police “take proactive steps in the healing process for all impacted.”
