On January 22nd, New Zealand’s ruling Labour Party confirmed former COVID minister Chris Hipkins will replace Jacinda Ardern as its new leader.
Chris Hopkins is set to become the next prime minister of the country.
Hopkins was the sole nominee for Labour Party leadership.
“This is the biggest privilege and biggest responsibility of my life,” Hipkins said at a news conference announcing his appointment. “I am energized and excited by the challenge that lies ahead.”
Hipkins named Carmel Sepuloni as deputy prime minister. Sepuloni will become New Zealand’s first deputy prime minister of Pacific origin.
