Oscar Leeser

El Paso Mayor declares state of emergency. Border crisis cited as trigger for declaration.

Where: El Paso, TX

The Facts

El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser has declared a state of emergency due to the ongoing situation at the border.
Representative Veronica Escobar commented on the state of affairs there, “The extraordinarily high numbers of migrants arriving in El Paso have created an unprecedented strain on our community and require significantly more federal resources as well as a broader, whole-of-government response.”
Representative Tony Gonzales stated, “What is happening at our southern border is a national security crisis, and it’s time for the Biden Administration to take accountability. Ending Title 42 without a plan is a recipe for disaster.”
The declaration of a state of emergency permits the city to utilize additional resources to operate larger shelters for migrants.
Title 42 (which has allowed officials to expel migrants on public health grounds) will end on Wednesday.
