The Facts
On Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader praised the paramilitary group responsible for killing hundreds of anti-government protestors in recent months.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described members of the protest movement as “rioters” and thugs” backed by foreign forces such as the United States.
Referring to thousands of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basijis, Khamenei stated, “You defended the Haram [holy shrines in Syria] from the U.S.-manufactured Daesh.”
Daesh is an Arabic acronym formed of the same words that make up I.S.I.S (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) in English.
The harshest crackdowns have occurred in Iran’s northwest, home to the Kurdish minority.
