China is ramping up its strict zero-COVID policy once again, including travel bans and city-wide quarantines, due to a surge in the number of infections across the country.
China’s Shanxi province was the first to impose a lockdown this week after officials reported a positive COVID-19 test in Fenyang city on Monday.
Xinjiang in Yunnan province went into lockdown on October 4th, with people forbidden to enter or leave the region pending further notice.
The Chinese Communist Party’s People’s Daily newspaper wrote, “Only by insisting on dynamically clearing (cases as they arise) could huge losses arising from losing control of the epidemic be avoided by the full extent.”
On Wednesday, China’s health authority reported 1,760 new local cases for October 11th.
