47 charged for stealing from program to feed needy children

Justice Department, Minnesota

47 charged with stealing millions in Covid 19 scheme. The accused stole $250 million from federal program.

Where: Minnesota

The Facts

On Tuesday, federal prosecutors charged 47 people with stealing $250 million from a federal child nutrition program.
A group of charities, restaurants, and individuals in Minnesota pulled off the fraudulent Covid 19 scheme by claiming they were feeding thousands of underserved children.
Using the proceeds, the accused parties reportedly bought real estate and luxury vehicles in Minnesota, Ohio, and Kentucky.
The money also went into real estate in Kenya and Turkey and toward funding international travel.
Calling the fraud a “brazen scheme of staggering proportions,” US Attorney Andrew M. Luger said, “They prioritized their own greed, stealing more than a quarter of a billion dollars in federal funds to purchase luxury cars, houses, jewelry, and coastal resort property abroad.”
