The Facts
On August 1st, President Joe Biden announced that the US had killed Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri during a successful counterterrorism operation in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian surgeon-turned-militant, was one of the main plotters of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people in the US.
Biden confirmed that the US intelligence community had determined that al-Zawahiri was living in downtown Kabul so he could “reunite with members of his immediate family.”
Biden authorized the “precision strike” that killed al-Zawahiri on Saturday. None of al-Zawahiri’s family members were hurt in the attack, with no civilian casualties reported by officials.
Biden stated, “The United States continues to demonstrate our resolve and our capacity to defend the American people against those who seek to do us harm.”
