The Facts

France’s National Assembly voted 209-46 to ratify Sweden and Finland’s NATO accession protocols.
The process to ratify the two countries as NATO’s newest members was officially launched in July; the legislative assemblies of all 30 NATO member states need to approve Finland and Sweden’s membership bids.
If ratified by the legislative assemblies of all NATO member states, the two Nordic countries’ membership would mark the organization’s ninth enlargement since it was founded in 1949.
The US Senate also ratified Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO on August 3rd.
NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) President Gerry Connolly said the two countries’ membership would “further strengthen our unique alliance of democracies. #NATOPA is helping make this the fastest enlargement ever, with 23 ratifications in less than a month.”
