Where: United States
The Facts
On August 1st, the Justice Department announced that a TX man, Guy Wesley Reffitt, had been sentenced to 87 months (7.25 years) in prison for his actions “before, during, and after” the 2021 US Capitol attack.
In March 2022, a DC jury found Reffitt guilty of two counts of civil disorder and one count each of obstruction of an official proceeding, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a firearm, and obstruction of justice.
Evidence indicated that Reffitt is a member of a militia organization called “Texas Three Percenters.” Reffitt had asked other group members to travel with him to Washington, DC, on January 6th, 2021.
Reffitt and another militia member left TX for WA on January 4th with handguns and AR-style rifles. Reffitt is the first individual to stand trial among the numerous charged in connection with the Capitol attack.
US attorney for DC Matthew Graves stated, “In (Reffitt’s) own words, his goal was to take the Capitol ‘before the day is over’… The jury’s verdict and today’s sentence hold him accountable for his violent, unconscionable conduct.”
