Rohingya Exodus to Bangladesh from Myanmar marks fifth anniversary
August 26, 2022
Rohingya refugee crisis marks 5 years. Rohingyas continue to suffer in Bangladesh.
Where: Myanmar
The Facts
Five years after fleeing from a bloody military campaign against them in Myanmar, hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas continue to suffer.
In 2017, thousands of Rohingyas, mostly Muslims, were killed and 745,000 displaced.
In March, the Biden administration officially declared the Burmese military campaign against the ethnic minority a “genocide.”
Nearly a million Rohingyas who fled to neighboring Bangladesh now live in poor conditions in overcrowded refugee camps and report a lack of employment opportunities and having their human rights violated.
Attempts to return Rohingyas to Myanmar have failed because the security situation in the southeast Asian nation has worsened since last year’s military coup.
