The Facts
On August 4th, former Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vazquez Garced was arrested on alleged bribery charges related to the financing of her 2020 gubernatorial campaign.
Garced, who was in office from 2019 to 2021, has been charged with conspiracy, federal programs bribery, and honest services wire fraud.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has stated that if Garced is convicted on all counts, she could face up to 20 years in prison.
Garced appeared in court for an initial hearing on Thursday. Garced has denied any wrongdoing.
The DOJ also announced that Frances Diaz (Bancredito international bank’s former President) and John Blakeman (Garced’s political consultant) had pleaded guilty to participating in the bribery scheme.
