China launches series of live-fire military drills around Taiwan

Pelosi vows to protect Taiwan’s democracy. Chinese aircraft enter “surrounding area” of Taiwan.

The Facts

On Wednesday, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and co left Taiwan after hailing its democracy, noting that their visit reinforced that the US “stands with Taiwan.”
Pelosi stated, “We came to Taiwan to listen to, learn from and show our support for the people of Taiwan, who have built a thriving Democracy that stands as one of the freest and most open in the world.”
Pelosi’s visit attracted strong Chinese condemnation, with Beijing launching several sea assaults and land and air combat live-fire military drills around Taiwanese territory.
Beijing also suspended natural sand exports to Taiwan and imports of fruits and fish products from Taiwan.
On August 3rd, Taiwan’s defense ministry reported that 27 People’s Liberation Army aircraft had entered the “surrounding area of ROC.” Taiwan is officially called the Republic of China (ROC).
