The Facts
A report from Amnesty International says Ukrainian forces have endangered civilians during the conflict with Russia by establishing bases in residential areas.
Ukrainian forces have been occupying schools and hospitals since the Russian invasion.
Amnesty stated, “Such tactics violate international humanitarian law and endanger civilians, as they turn civilian objects into military targets.”
International humanitarian law requires conflicting parties to avoid locating, to the extent possible, military objectives within or close to densely populated areas.
Amnesty further states, “Armed conflicts seriously hamper children’s right to education, and military use of schools can result in destruction that further deprives children of this right once the war ends.”
