Sprite to introduce new sustainable bottles in August
Sprite
Sprite to shift to more sustainable bottles. New bottles will be clear.
Where: North America
The Facts
Next month, Sprite will do away with its signature green plastic bottles after a stint of 60 years.
The initiative comes as part of broader efforts by the company to be more sustainable.
Sprite’s current bottles contain green polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which makes them unsuitable for recycling, thereby increasing plastic waste.
On Wednesday, Sprite owner, Coca-Cola, stated that the beverage would be packaged in clear plastic bottles moving forward.
CEO of R3CYCLE, Julian Ocha, who is helping Coca-Cola improve its recycling figures, said, “When recycled, clear PET Sprite bottles can be remade into bottles, helping drive a circular economy for plastic.”
