The Facts
Indianapolis Colts owner and philanthropist Jim Irsay placed the winning bid for Mohammad Ali’s heavyweight championship belt at Heritage Auctions.
Ali’s World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight championship belt was acquired in 1974’s legendary Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire.
A Heritage Auctions press release stated, “The WBC belt realized $6,180,000, the highest price for a sports collectible sold at Heritage Auctions.”
The belt was one of several sports memorabilia lots on sale over a weekend event organized by Heritage Auctions.
Jim Irsay tweeted, “Just in time for the Aug. 2 show at Chicago’s Navy Pier (and Sept. 9 at Indy). Proud to be the steward!”
