On Thursday, the FDA announced that updated booster shots would be rolled out by this fall to protect against the most prevalent coronavirus subvariants.
The updated vaccines will cover the Omicron subvariants BA. 4 and BA. 5.
The FDA announcement comes days after an expert panel voted to update the Covid booster shots.
The FDA stated, “As we move into the fall and winter, it is critical that we have safe and effective vaccine boosters that can provide protection against circulating and emerging variants to prevent the most severe consequences of covid-19.”
On Wednesday, the Biden administration directed $3.2 billion to Pfizer-BioNTech for 105 million vaccines in case of a surge in case numbers this fall.
