US State Department says Brittney Griner couldn’t speak to her wife due to a “logistical error”

Griner’s call with her wife was rescheduled. Griner was detained in Russia in February.

Where: United States

The Facts

US basketball star Brittney Griner could not talk to her wife over the weekend due to a “logistical error,” according to the US Department of State. Griner, 31, was detained in Russia earlier this year on an alleged drug possession charge.
Department of State spokesperson Ned Price stated, “It was a logistical issue that was compounded in part by the fact that our embassy in Moscow is under significant restrictions in terms of its staffing.”
Price added that the call has been rescheduled, and they have done everything they can to rectify the issue.
Russian authorities detained Griner in February after allegedly finding several cannabis oil vape cartridges in her luggage. In May, the Department of State determined that she had been “wrongfully detained” by Russia.
If convicted, Griner could face up to 10 years in prison. Last week, Griner’s pre-trial detention period was extended to July 2nd.
