The Facts
A flight scheduled to take the first set of asylum seekers from the UK to Rwanda on Tuesday has been canceled after a legal battle.
Refugee charity, Care4Calais, tweeted, “BREAKING: Last ticket canceled. NO ONE IS GOING TO RWANDA.”
The European Court of Human Rights granted an urgent interim measure in the case of an Iraqi national who was facing deportation to Rwanda.
A press release stated, “The European Court has indicated to the UK Government that the applicant should not be removed to Rwanda until three weeks after the delivery of the final domestic decision in his ongoing judicial review proceedings.”
The UK Home Office maintains that the arrangement with Rwanda is intended to act as a deterrent against dangerous and illegal journeys by migrants to the UK.
