The Facts
MN’s City of Brooklyn Center has agreed to pay $3.25 million to Daunte Wright’s family as a settlement. Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by a police officer in 2021.
However, attorneys for Wright’s family stated, “The settlement will not be finalized until an agreement is also reached on substantial and meaningful non-monetary relief.”
This non-monetary relief is expected to include training for Brooklyn Center’s police department on various elements, such as officer intervention, weapons confusion, etc.
Attorneys for Wright’s family added that a permanent memorial would be created for Wright over the existing Daunte Wright Memorial in Brooklyn Center.
In April 2021, former police officer Kim Potter fatally shot Daunte Wright during a routine traffic stop. Potter was found guilty of first and second-degree murder and sentenced to two years in prison.
