The Facts
According to early results from Sunday’s election, French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist coalition is set to lose its absolute parliamentary majority.
The news comes less than two months after Macron’s re-election as president.
The centrist Ensemble coalition is still on course to win the elections for the French National Assembly. However, they have lost dozens of seats, making pushing reforms much more difficult going forward.
Meanwhile, a left-wing alliance of five parties is expected to finish second, with Marine Le Pen’s far-right party taking the third spot.
The left-wing alliance, known as NUPES, is led by Jean-Luc Melenchon.
