Sporting body UEFA suspends Russian women’s soccer team

Sporting body imposes sanctions on Russian teams. Ban resulting from Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Facts

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has suspended Russian players from the Women’s European Championship and from participating in qualifying for next year’s World Cup.
The UEFA Executive Committee took a series of decisions relating to Russian teams and clubs with the aim of ensuring smooth staging in a safe and secure environment.
UEFA stated, “Russia will not participate in group C of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 final tournament scheduled between 6 and 31 July in England and will be replaced by Portugal, the opponent Russia defeated in the play-offs.”
UEFA further stated, “Russia will have no affiliated clubs participating in UEFA club competitions in the 2022/23 season.”
Several international sports leagues and organizations have banned Russian teams and athletes from competition since the country’s invasion of Ukraine in February, However, not everyone is supportive of these bans.
