Rich Strike comes first at Kentucky Derby

Kentucky Derby opens with full capacity after pandemic. Rich Strike comes first in the 148th Kentucky Derby.

Where: Churchill Downs

The Facts

Spectators crammed into the first full Kentucky Derby since the coronavirus pandemic began. Churchill Downs was packed by early afternoon on Saturday, hours before the day’s biggest race.
For two years, the pandemic upended the typical extravagance of Derby Day. The 2020 running was delayed until Labor Day weekend and held without spectators.
Last year’s race strictly limited the number of tickets sold. This year, Churchill Downs hoped to surpass its pre-pandemic number of 150,000.
Final entry Rich Strike crossed the finish line first in the 148th Kentucky Derby, outracing favorite Epicenter and Zandon.
An 80-1 long shot, Rich Strike entered the Kentucky Derby field on Friday as a last-minute replacement for Ethereal Road.
