Responders search for survivors of capsized boat off Puerto Rico

The Facts

A migrant boat capsized off the coast of Puerto Rico on Thursday. Responders continued to search for survivors.
A news release from the US Coast Guard stated, “Rescued are 38 survivors, 36 Haitian and two Dominican Republic nationals, of which eight remain hospitalized. Rescue crews also recovered 11 people deceased, whose nationalities are yet to be determined.”
Haitians are fleeing their country in increasing numbers because of a rise in gang violence, kidnappings, poverty, and natural disasters.
Haitians have been undertaking dangerous voyages on vessels that are not sea-worthy and overcrowded.
It is not known how many people were on board the boart when it capsized.
