The Facts

North Korea has reported its first official case of Covid 19.
This is Pyongyang’s first acknowledgement of a Covid case in the country.
The patient is reported to have been infected by the BA.2 omicron subvariant of the virus.
According to state media reports, Leader Kim Jong-un has announced a “severe emergency incident” and imposed a nationwide lockdown to contain the virus.
In July 2020, Kim had declared similar measures in Kaesong City, near the border with South Korea, due to a suspected Covid case.
