Officials help a passenger with ‘no idea how to fly’ land an aircraft in FL

Inexperienced passenger lands plane in FL. The pilot had had a medical emergency.

Where: FL

The Facts

On May 10th, a Cessna 208 pilot flying with two passengers to FL from the Bahamas was suddenly incapacitated due to a medical issue.
One of the passengers stabilized the aircraft before contacting Fort Pierce Tower at Treasure Coast International Airport. The passenger had no previous flying experience.
Officials determined that the plane was about 20 miles from Boca Raton Airport and used basic emergency radios to communicate as the passenger did not know how to change radio frequencies.
Air Traffic Control authorities guided the passenger through a successful landing at the Palm Beach International Airport. The Airport was specifically chosen for the landing due to its longer runway, lower congestion rates, and adequate radio coverage.
According to the FAA, first responders assisted the certified pilot upon landing. Neither of the two passengers were injured.
