New Zealand welcomes back tourists as Covid rules are relaxed

New Zealand lifts border restrictions. Borders open up after two years.

Where: New Zealand

The Facts

On Monday, New Zealand welcomed tourists from the US, Canada, Britain, Japan, and more than 50 other countries for the first time in more than two years.
Before the spread of COVID-19, more than 3 million tourists visited each year, accounting for 20% of New Zealand’s foreign income and more than 5% of the overall economy.
International tourism stopped in early 2020 after New Zealand imposed some of the world’s most rigid border restrictions.
The border rules remained in place as the government pursued an elimination strategy and then tried to tightly control the spread of the virus.
Tourism minister Stuart Nash stated, “The welcome mat is out for citizens of visa-waiver nations, who like Australians can now travel here without isolation if they are vaccinated and do a pre-departure and arrival test.”
