On Monday, Andy Warhol’s 1964 pop art portrait of actress Marilyn Monroe sold for roughly $195 million.
The sale was made at Christie’s, New York, as part of an auction.
“Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” was sold at an auction record for a modern painting, $195,040,000.
This portrait is one of five 40-inch square paintings Warhol made of the actress in 1964.
Warhol’s biographer Blake Gopnik said about the painting, “It’s so crisp and clean, it looks like a reproduction of itself.”
