The Facts
On Wednesday, The Interior Department announced it had canceled three offshore oil and gas lease sales.
The lease sales had been expected to go ahead in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Cook Inlet.
The move comes as gas prices hit all-time highs in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In an e-mail, the department said that it “will not move forward with the proposed Cook Inlet OCS oil and gas lease sale 258,” due to a “lack of industry interest in leasing in the area.”
The statement added that “sales 259 and 261 in the Gulf of Mexico region” were also canceled.
