The Facts
On Sunday, the Group of Seven (G7) nations committed to ban, or phase out, imports of Russian oil.
In a joint statement, the G7 leaders elaborated, “We commit to phase out our dependency on Russian energy, including by phasing out or banning the import of Russian oil. We will ensure that we do so in a timely and orderly fashion.”
The United States have also announced fresh sanctions against three Russian television stations, banned Americans from providing accounting and consulting services to Russians, and sanctioned Gazprombank executives.
The new sanctions are the latest effort by the US and its allies to increase pressure on Putin, arriving as US President Joe Biden met virtually with G7 leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The White House also stated that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission would be suspending licenses for exports of special nuclear material to Russia.
