US president began his six-day trip to South Korea and Japan to strengthen Indo-Pacific alliances amid China’s rise and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
On Friday evening, Biden landed at the Osan Air Base, 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) south of Seoul.
After a three-day visit that includes a summit with his South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk-yeol, he will leave for Japan on Sunday for talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
In Seoul and Tokyo, Biden is expected to discuss the North’s nuclear program and the US’ economic and security ties with its two treaty allies in Asia.
In Tokyo, Biden is also expected to convene a summit of the leaders of the Quad (US, Japan, India, and Australia) and launch the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). This framework seeks to set standards on supply chains, worker protections, de-carbonization, and anti-corruption.
