The Facts
On May 12th, President Joe Biden issued a statement marking the death of one million individuals in the US due to COVID-19.
Biden stated, “In remembrance, let us draw strength from each other as fellow Americans. For while we have been humbled, we never give up. We can and will do this together as the United States of America.”
Biden also noted that it is “critical” that Congress sustain the resources needed to tackle COVID-19 in the country “in the coming months.”
Biden ordered the US flag to be flown at half-staff – in memory of those who have lost their lives – at the White House, all public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations, US embassies, consular offices, and other assorted facilities abroad.
The first COVID-19 case in the US was reported in January 2020. The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic on March 11th, 2020.
