The Facts
Activist and journalist Roman Protasevich’s girlfriend Sofia Sapega was sentenced to six years in prison by a Belarusian court.
Russian state-run news agency TASS said the Grodnensky District Court found Sapega guilty on charges of “deliberate acts aimed at inciting social enmity and discord on the basis of social affiliation committed by a group of persons, which had grave consequences.”
Sapega and Protasevich were arrested in May 2021 after a Ryanair plane they were flying on was forced to divert to Minsk.
The forced landing led to sanctions against Belarus.
Protasevich had allegedly campaigned against the authoritarian President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.
