Where: World
On Wednesday, Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American journalist working for Al Jazeera, was shot dead while covering an Israeli military raid in the city of Jenin.
The international community has condemned Abu Akleh’s killing. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the US, and the EU, among others, called for an independent investigation into the incident to ensure that those responsible will be held accountable.
The Israeli military has come forward and stated it encountered an attack with heavy gunfire and explosives in Jenin and had fired back. They added that they are “investigating the event and looking into the possibility that the journalists were hit by the Palestinian gunmen.”
Palestinian authorities and Al Jazeera have blamed Israeli forces for Abu Akleh’s death. Palestinian officials announced that they were investigating Abu Akleh’s killing and added that they would be taking the case to the international criminal court.
Al Jazeera said it “holds the Israeli government and the occupation forces responsible for the killing of Shireen.”
