On Wednesday, thousands of people took to the streets in Sri Lanka after police opened fire on demonstrators, killing one and injuring 13 others.
The island country has been facing its worst economic crisis in decades.
The shooting was the first by Sri Lankan security forces amid weeks of protests. The shooting occurred on Tuesday in Rambukkana, 90 kilometers (55 miles) northeast of the capital, Colombo.
Fifteen police officers were admitted to a hospital for their injuries after violent clashes with protesters.
President Rajapaksa and his brother, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, stated that police would be carrying out an impartial investigation into the incident at Rambukkana.
