Title 42 expulsions to end in May. Over 1.5M asylum cases pending.
Where: United States
The Facts
On Friday, the Biden administration announced it would be terminating the Title 42 public health policy.
Title 42 was used by both the Trump and Biden administrations to quickly expel migrants at the southern border since the start of the pandemic.
With the end of the ban on the 23rd of May, the United States is expected to see an increase in migration with an existing backlog of over 1.5 million asylum cases.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) stated, “After considering current public health conditions and an increased availability of tools to fight COVID-19 (such as highly effective vaccines and therapeutics), the CDC Director has determined that an Order suspending the right to introduce migrants into the United States is no longer necessary.”
The Title 42 restrictions were put in place in March 2020 under the Trump administration as COVID-19 cases soared.
