Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, has confirmed that she will not be seeking a second term in office.
Lam, 64, announced that she will be stepping back from the role and would instead be prioritizing her family.
Lam stated, “This is not a question of evaluating my performance or the performance of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in this term. This is a question of my personal wish and aspiration, and my personal wish and aspiration is entirely based on my family consideration.”
Lam has been the target of much criticism from the residents of Hong Kong for her supposed mishandling of the city’s latest outbreak of Covid-19.
The Chief Executive is not popularly elected by the people but is selected by a pro-Beijing committee.
