FDA introduces plan prohibiting menthol cigarettes & flavored cigars

FDA proposes plan prohibiting menthol cigarettes. Banning characterizing flavors in cigars also proposed.

Where: United States

The Facts

On April 28th, the FDA proposed product standards banning menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes and all characterizing flavors (except tobacco) in cigars.
According to the FDA, the proposed plan will reduce youth experimentation and addiction and bolster the number of individuals that will quit smoking.
The FDA added that the proposed actions could potentially reduce disease and death resulting from the use of combustible tobacco products, which currently stands as the leading cause of preventable deaths in the US.
Health and Human Services Secretary, Xavier Becerra, stated, “…the proposed rules represent an important step to advance health equity by significantly reducing tobacco-related health disparities.”
Citizens can provide comments on FDA’s proposed rules beginning from May 4th through July 5th. The agency will review these comments and take them into consideration as it further refines its course of action.
