Colorado inmate working with poultry infected with bird flu

The Facts

An inmate at a correctional facility in Colorado working with poultry has contracted bird flu.
The male, less than 40 years old, is largely asymptomatic and reported fatigue.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment stated, “Earlier this week, a test revealed the presence of the influenza A (H5) virus in a single nasal specimen from a person who was working on a farm with infected poultry. CDC confirmed the result on April 27, 2022.”
The infected person is being treated with the drug Oseltamivir (tamiflu).
Dr. Rachel Herlihy, State epidemiologist stated, “We want to reassure Coloradans that the risk to them is low.”
