The Facts
On Thursday, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency recorded 621,328 new Covid cases.
Thursday’s cases represent a marked increase, up 55% from Wednesday’s 400,730 cases.
Thursday also stands as South Korea’s deadliest day since the pandemic began, with 429 reported fatalities.
Health officials believe they were able to mitigate a death rate that they feel could have been higher, by means of an effective vaccination program.
The surge in cases comes as South Korea moved to ease antivirus measures after the less-fatal, but highly infectious. Omicron variant became the country’s dominant strain.
