DHS grants temporary protected status to Ukraine. Status applies to Ukrainians in the US from March 1st.
Where: Ukraine
The Facts
The Department of Homeland Security has granted Ukrainian nationals in the US Temporary Protected Status (TPS), effective for the next 18 months.
Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Russia’s premeditated and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has resulted in an ongoing war, senseless violence, and Ukrainians forced to seek refuge in other countries. In these extraordinary times, we will continue to offer our support and protection to Ukrainian nationals in the United States.”
In order to qualify for TPS, individuals must have been continuously resident in the US from March 1, 2022.
Ukraine is designated for TPS based on ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions that prevent Ukraine residents from returning safely to Ukraine.
The conditions are a result of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.
