The Facts
China has witnessed a rise in COVID-19 infections due to a new, highly infectious Omicron variant.
Head of the expert panel of China’s COVID-19 response efforts, Liang Wannian, stated that the country would need to stick to its “dynamic zero-Covid” policy due to rising domestic and international outbreaks.
Liang Wannian added that an individual infected with the Omicron variant could pass it on to 6-8 other people; thus, the virus would be enabled to spread exponentially in the absence of any intervention.
Liang Wannian stated, “I know everyone is hoping for the pandemic to end soon, but the viruses and diseases themselves do not depend on our will.”
This Tuesday, China’s National Health Commission recorded 2,667 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,469 new asymptomatic cases on the Chinese mainland.
