The Facts

On January 30th, Spotify announced that it was working on adding a content advisory label to any podcast episode that discussed COVID-19.

According to Spotify, the advisory will direct listeners to their COVID-19 information hub so that they can easily access “data-driven facts” and the latest verifiable information regarding COVID-19.

Spotify has also since updated its long-standing platform rules, stating, “We have had rules in place for many years, but admittedly, we haven’t been transparent around the policies that guide our content more broadly.”

Spotify’s move follows recent criticism of the music streaming platform for providing a platform for podcasts that spread misinformation regarding COVID-19.

In recent days, singers Neil Young and Joni Mitchell have removed their music from Spotify. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have also expressed their concerns about the prevalence of COVID-19 misinformation on the platform.
