The Facts
Based on the trajectory of the pandemic, South Africa has lifted curfew rules, and there will be no restrictions on the hours of movement of the people.
The government says all indicators suggest that the country may have already crossed the peak of the Covid wave, which is driven mainly by the Omicron variant.
The government Covid update states, “The information gathered through the system used by the Department of Health has reported a 29.7% decrease in the number of new cases detected in the week ending 25 December 2021 (89,781), compared to the number of new cases detected in the previous week (127,753).”
According to WHO Covid statistics, 3,424,534 confirmed cases have been reported in South Africa, with 90,854 deaths.
Elsewhere in the world, the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly.
