The Facts

The President of Kazakhstan said he had authorized law enforcement to aggressively control protestors.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated, “I ordered to launch a counter-terrorist operation to eliminate the national security threat and to protect lives and properties of the citizens of Kazakhstan.”

The protests began over a severe increase in the price of vehicle fuel and have turned violent after spreading across the country.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization is sending troops to Kazakhstan to maintain peace.

The Almaty airport will remain shut until January 9th.
