On January 5th, US Attorney General Merrick Garland delivered remarks on the eve of the first anniversary of the 2021 January 6th Capitol attack.
During the speech, Garland named and remembered five officers – Officers Sicknick, Liebengood, Smith, Hashida, and DeFreytag – who responded to the Capitol attack and had since lost their lives.
Garland reported that authorities had arrested and charged over 725 individuals in connection to their roles in the January 6th attack.
Garland added that the Justice Department had so far issued more than 5,000 subpoenas and search warrants, searched through approximately 15 terabytes of data, and received over 300,000 tips from ordinary citizens.
Garland stated, “The Justice Department remains committed to holding all January 6th perpetrators, at any level, accountable under law – whether they were present that day or were otherwise criminally responsible for the assault on our democracy.”
