The Facts
The Beijing Olympic Committee has warned athletes against protesting at the Winter Olympics.
Chinese authorities stated, “Any behavior or speech that is against the Olympic spirit, especially against the Chinese laws and regulations, are subject to certain punishment.”
Australian sports minister, Richard Colbeck, criticized Beijing for its statement and said, “The IOC has made it clear that all athletes have the right to political opinions and the freedom to express them, including through social media and media interviews.”
China has lowered the threshold for negative COVID tests for participants dropping the cycle threshold (Ct) value from 40 to 35, which will make it easier for participants to produce a negative test.
Beijing has also instructed mass testing in a district with roughly 2 million residents ahead of the games.
