The Netherlands enforces strict Covid precautions

The Netherlands goes into lockdown. Move to curb the spread of Omicron variant.

Where: Netherlands

The Facts

The Netherlands government announced a tight lockdown over Christmas amid rising cases of the Omicron COVID variant.

The government is taking several measures that will be effective until January 14th, 2022.

Most locations are closed, including restaurants & bars, cinemas, concert halls, zoos, gyms, swimming pools, and non-essential shops.

The Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport tweeted, “The advance of the omicron variant will lead to an increase in the number of corona patients in hospitals this year. That’s faster than expected. That is why the Netherlands will be in lockdown from December 19th to at least January 14th.” (translated)

The WHO tweeted, “Given the current available data, it is likely that Omicron will outpace the Delta variant where community transmission occurs.”
